On October 29, 2024, one of the largest natural disasters in the history of Spain in decades and the worst in the history of the Valencian Community took place. The reason was a DANA (Isolated Depressions at High Levels), which has caused the loss of more than 200 lives, thousands missing and countless material damages.
Faced with this situation, at Women in a Legal World, and cooperation being one of our fundamental pillars, we have created the Working Group to Help Those Affected by DANA, whose main objectives are:
The preparation of an information guide in which we address the main queries and doubts that are arising among the civilian population.
The publication in various media of press articles analyzing the main legal implications derived from the DANA to keep citizens informed.
Channeling information on where to make donations.
Channeling information on where to volunteer on-site.
In relation to point (1), the preparation of an information guide, we have based our work – in addition to our experience as lawyers – on the information published by the different public administrations and official organizations. The result is this document, which aims to offer help from a legal perspective, just as we did in the past with:
- The creation of Women in a Legal World’s Ukraine Assistance Task Force, made up of lawyers who offered their services to those affected by the war in Ukraine to manage their entry into the International Protection Reception System.
- The Syria and Türkiye Project, in which Women in a Legal World partnered with the Red Cross to raise funds to help communities affected by natural disasters.
NB: This guide has been created for informational purposes only to facilitate access to practical and useful public information for people affected by DANA. It does not constitute legal advice nor does it imply the provision of legal services. Specific legal queries should be directed to the Legal Guidance Services of the Bar Associations, officially authorized to provide assistance in situations of special vulnerability, in accordance with the General Council of Spanish Lawyers (CGAE). All professional collaboration of a legal and solidarity nature will be carried out exclusively through these services, in coordination with current regulations.
